I was wounded on 20 August 1970.

I had joined the army as a Tankie and later transferred to 161 Battery for an overseas tour in South Vietnam, 12 months in country.

While 161 Battery was in South Vietnam one of the best chess players was Sergeant Heta Tobin, (Ngapuhi). As a chess player, Heta was brilliant, and his reputation was well known.

Written after the announcement by Keith Holyoake that New Zealand will contribute troops to Vietnam.

Pastures green, poppy fields,
graves for soldiers fallen.
A wooden cross marks a resting place,

Young Kiwi soldiers, lying so quietly,
merged into the rotting jungle floor.
Spaced in a line, rifles in hand,
machine guns steady, silent and still.
