Rowan Jeffrey Waddell was born at Lower Hutt from parents who both served in the NZ Airforce, although his father Andrew McArthur Waddell served as a radio operator gunner of bomber command attached to the British Royal Airforce during WWII. Rowan grew up in several places namely, Paekakariki, Stanley Bay and Milford where he attended Westlake Boys' High school. He joined the Regular Force Cadet Corp of the NZ Army and on graduation he joined 161 Bty 16 Field Regiment and served two tours of duty in Vietnam 1966/67 and 1969/70. We married in 1971 and have been blessed with 3 beautiful daughters and so far 8 grandchildren and possibly one great grandchild but unfortunately the mother our eldest grandchild, namely Mariah-Rose Kororia Waddell has been estranged from our family since 2005. We hope to one day be reunited with her because she is unaware that she carries the effects of agent orange which has afflicted her grandfather Rowan, her mum Marika-Rose and her younger sister Jessica. Rowan and Marika are presenting evidence in next year's 2016 Military Veterans hearing before the Waitangi Tribunal.
