Beyond the Within - Poem

Submitted by Richard Willia… on

Poem by Richard Hamon, Whiskey 2 Company 1RNZIR, 1968-1969. Dedicated to those who have been and who still are traumatised by the Vietnam War. Hold steadfast to life and to love and kindness. Be strong and be brave.

I know not from whence the wind may blow
The fresh cool zephyr that makes my face aglow
I know not from whence the wind may blow
That frolics with the autumn leaves and makes my passions grow

But I know from whence the storm will come
From the depths of hell it will begin
The tempest raging within my head
With its thunderous roar and din

And when the fire storm comes from beyond the within
I hear the shadows screech and howl
Gnashing their teeth back and forth
Ending with a hideous growl

As soon as it comes there is peace again
I feel the warmth of the sun on my face
But I am weary of any hope that it brings
For there is always another storm to brace
