The band waits to board a Chinook helicopter - 1RNZIR Band Tour, 1969

28 October 1969: A Chinook helicopter lands to transport the band to Fire Support Base Discovery, an artillery base supported by New Zealand infantry. Watch a photo slideshow of the 1RNZIR Band tour here.

Immediately after lunch we left Nui Dat by Chinook helicopter for "Fire Support Base Discovery" (FSBD) in an effort to catch Whisky Company or Victor Company in the jungle...The 20 minute flight was unique for us because of a number of factors: we carried weapons, Self Loading Rifles (SLR) or Armalites, and the noisy military experience of flying in this efficient machine with machine gun nests on each side and a spotter hole in the floor, was novel to all.

Major Jim Carson (1934-2008), 1RNZIR Bandmaster
