Joined New Zealand Army in 1963. Served in Malaysia and Borneo in 1965. Returned to New Zealand in November 1965 and volunteered to retrain as a gunner and join 161 Battery RNZA in Vietnam. Served in Vietnam with 161 Battery, May 1966 to May 1967 (Member of FO Party attached to A Coy 6RAR, August 1966 to May 1967); and W2 Company, November 1968 to November 1969 (Section Commander, 2 Section of 2 Platoon).
