From Wellington, David Barber was the fourth New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) war correspondent (after Chris Turver, Richard Long, and David Exel) in South Vietnam, 1970–1972. Completed many 2–3 week trips into Vietnam. Signed in to Victor Company Sergeant's Mess Visitors Book on 5 May 1971 (NAM Collection).
Served on HMNZS Otago for the protest against French nuclear tests at Mururoa, June–July 1973.
