Enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) in June 1963, serving on HMNZS Otago. Changed service to New Zealand Army in August 1965, passing selection for New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS). Served with 4 Detachment NZSAS in Borneo, June–October 1966. Posted to Vietnam in November 1968 with the first detachment of 4 Troop, NZSAS. Wounded in action, 15 October 1969 – fall from extraction rope after helicopter crashed due to engine failure. Took his release from the New Zealand Army in January 1970 before re-enlisting in for a year in February 1971. Served again as a Military Police (MP) with Royal New Zealand Provost Corps (RNZPro), 1980–1984; and in the Territorial Force (TF), 1985–1989.
