Enlisted in the New Zealand Army as a Staff Cadet in January 1960. Graduated from Royal Military College, Duntroon in December 1963 into the RNZA. Member of Operation Powderhorn to the United Kingdom in October 1964.
Passed selection for NZSAS in 1965 and served with 3 Detachment, 1st Ranger Squadron in Borneo in early 1966. Posted to 161 Battery in Vietnam as an FO in 1966–67. Moved to Australia and joined the Army Reserve, serving in artillery units. Later qualified as a lawyer and changed to the Australian Army Legal Corps rising to the rank of Colonel.
