Prior to his civilian service in Vietnam, Dr, Patrick Fraser Howden, M.B., Ch.B., (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) served with the New Zealand Medical Corps in the Second World War and was attached to the 2nd New Zealand Divisional Cavalry. Captain Howden, NZMC, was appointed Medical Officer of the Divisional Cavalry in North Africa, late in 1943, part of the regimental staff as it prepared for the invasion in Italy. He served as M.O. during the major engagements of the Italy campaign, and was promoted to Major on 17 November 1944.  At the start of his military career, Dr. Howden was posted to 1st Field Ambulance on 30 July 1940, and became part of the New Zealand Medical Corps on 7 January 1941. He was officially entered on New New Zealand Expeditionary Force Nominal Roll in the second quarter of 1941, as a Lieutenant in the 14th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. His number was 38699. At that time, he was a doctor at Auckland Hospital. The 14th A.A. Regiment served in North Africa until the Desert Air Force achieved control of the skies over Egypt and Libya, The regiment was then disbanded, and its members dispersed across the 2nd New Zealand Division. That coincided with preparations for Italy. Dr. Howden was born 31 May 1913. He died in 1996.
