Served in RNZAF 11 January 1957 to 1 March 1977. Completed 28 flights into or through Vietnam with 41 Sqn RNZAF (1965–1968 and 1975), and seven flights into Vietnam with 40 Sqn RNZAF (1969–1971). Held the rank of Squadron Leader from 1969.

Also served in Antarctica with US Navy VX6 Squadron November 1961 to March 1962 as RNZAF observer. Now lives in the United States. 

In 2021, Peter published a book – On the Bridges Between Heaven and Earth: Sixty Years of Living Dangerously – about his 20 years in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, including six months with the USN Sqn VX-6 in Antarctica, one year in the Indonesian warzone of Borneo and ten years in the warzone of South Vietnam.
