Served in the RNZN (Royal New Zealand Navy) 1952–1965. Took part in Operation Grapple – the testing of nuclear weapons in the then Gilbert and Ellice Islands (now Kiribati and Tuvalu) in 1957. Joined the New Zealand Police before enlisting in the New Zealand Army from May 1967 to February 1970. Served in Vietnam with 1ALSG (1st Australian Logistic Support Group) as a warder at the 2nd Military Corrective Establishment in Vung Tau. Enlisted in the RNZAF (Royal New Zealand Air Force) as a GSH (General Service Hand) in 1985.
