Joined the New Zealand Army on 11 January 1963 as a Regular Force Cadet. Posted to 1 Bn Dept Burnham and then to 1RNZIR at Terendak in Malaysia. Served in Borneo (1966) as an Assault Pioneer under Rata Rewiri and Leo Duggan before going to Vietnam with Victor 1 Coy (The Originals). Took discharge in March 1968. Re-entered the military and completed another 25 years of assorted soldiering. This included further service in Vietnam with the Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), December 1969 to October 1971.
