Joined the New Zealand Army in 1959 as a Regular Force (RF) Cadet. Attended Officer Cadet School Portsea in Australia before commissioned as an officer in the New Zealand Army in 1964. Served in Vietnam as a platoon commander with Victor 3 (V3) Company.
