From Wellington, David Barber was the fourth NZPA war correspondent (after Chris Turver, Richard Long, and Derek Round) in South Vietnam, 1970–1972. NZOSM and NZGSM 1992 awarded 16 December 2002. Signed in to Victor Company Sgt's Mess Visitors Book on 5 May 1971 (NAM Collection). Completed many 2–3 week trips into Vietnam. Served on HMNZS Otago for the protest against French nuclear tests at Mururoa, June–July 1973.
