Selwyn was a saxophone player with the Māori HyMarques showband in Vietnam from 28 January 1970 to 31 July 1971. He raised the case for the New Zealand entertainers to have their service in Vietnam recognised but died in Hamilton before it was approved. His medals were presented to his family at Government House Auckland by HE Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae on 20 July 2016. In honour of his contribution to the case for his peers, his medals were the first presented.
