Sam was a multi-instrumentalist but mainly a bass saxophone player in the Quin Tikis showband in Vietnam from May 1965 to April 1966. He has passed away in October 1974, his medals were presented to his son David who flew to New Zealand to receive them from his uncle (Lt Gen Sir Jerry Mateparae) at Government House Auckland on 20 July 2016.
