Joined the New Zealand Army in 1968. Served in 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR). This included a tour to Vietnam with Whiskey 3 (W3) Company, 1969−1970. Left the Army in 1974 before rejoining in 1980 and serving with the New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS) until retirement at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1992. Worked internationally for over 25-years as a security contractor, close protection instructor, and security consultant before settling in the Philippines.
