Enlisted into Compulsory Military Training (CMT) as Gunner, Royal New Zealand Artillery (RNZA) on 22 April 1954. Medical discharge from CMT on 16 August 1956. Joined Regular Force (RF) as Engineer 9 October 1963  (civilian trade was declared as bricklayer) until resignation at own request 19 November 1968. By then he had qualified as a Clerk of Works. Re-joined Royal New Zealand Engineers (RNZE) as Territorial Force (TF) NCO 25 March 1970 — posted to Vietnam in RF (ERE) role as a SSgt Clerk of Works from 25 April 1970 to 15 December 1970 and transferred back to TF in RNZE. Stayed in TF as SSgt until 7 July 1971 then re-enlisted in RF— posted to 2 Works Section, RNZE as SSgt. Served as SSgt in RNZE until final retirement 20 August 1976. Reg was posted to Vietnam as the clerk of works for the building of the Children’s Ward of the Qui Nhon Hospital.
