Enlisted in the Regular Force (RF) after Compulsory Military Training (CMT) in the 1950s. Posted to 1st Battalion, NZ Regiment in 1961 as a Corporal in Headquarters Company, and then to the RF Cadet School initially as a Storeman then the Quartermaster sergeant (QMS). In 1967 he was posted to 1st Battalion Depot in Burnham prior to being posted to 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR) in Singapore. Appointed Company Quartermaster sergeant (CQMS) of Victor 5 (V5) Company in Vietnam, May 1970 to May 1971.
