Val was in the initial detachment of 161 Battery RNZA sent to Vietnam and attached to the 173rd Airborne Brigade at Bien Hoa. Two of his brothers, Terry and James, served with the Australian forces in Vietnam. Val was wounded in action on 21 September 1965 during Operation Ben Cat 1.
