First joined the New Zealand Army as a member of the Reserve Forces, 8 November 1960 to 6 October 1961. Rejoined the army as a Regular Force soldier with the RNZASC on the 23 September 1964 and served until 3 September 1969.
Deployed to Vietnam with 161 Battery RNZA, July 1965 to November 1966. Driver/Gun Number with Arther Simeon's gun crew – drove one of the Battery's US ammunition trucks nicknamed 'Sorrow on the Rocks'. Joined the Australian Army (RAASC) in 1970 and served a second tour in Vietnam as an Air Dispatcher in 1971. Remained in this role until retiring as a WO2 in 1995.
