Enlisted in the New Zealand Army as Regular Force (RF) cadet in the Kippenberger Class, 1959. Served in Malaysia and Borneo with B Company, 1st New Zealand Regiment; 1st Ranger Squadron, New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS); and 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (1RNZIR) between 1963 and 1965. Served in Vietnam with Victor 4 Company, 1969–1970; 4 Troop NZSAS, 1970–1971; and the 2nd New Zealand Army Training Team Vietnam (2NZATTV), 1972.
