Enlisted as New Zealand Army cadet in 1960 before completing trade course as a fitter/turner. Left the army and re-enlisted in 1964 and joined RNZSigs. Posted to 1RNZIR in Signals Platoon 1965–1967, including Borneo and Vietnam with V1 Company as a Company Signaller. Once back in New Zealand he transferred to RNZEME. Retired as a Sergeant in 1972.
