Conscripted into Compulsory Military Training (CMT) programme in 1952. Transferred into the Regular Force (RF), joining the Corps of Royal New Zealand Engineers (RNZE). 

Served in Korea with 10 Company, Royal New Zealand Army Service Corps (RNZASC), 1954−1955. Exchange instructor to the Royal School of Engineers in the United Kingdom, 1956−1958. Returned to New Zealand and selected to join New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS) training in 1963. 

Deployed to Vietnam with New Zealand Army Detachment (NEWZAD), 1964−1965. Described as 'one of the major factors in the successful integration of the Engineer team. An experienced WO, he led by example and wore down the Vietnamese objections by persistence and charm.' 

Received officers commission in 1968, serving in various roles, including Chief Instructor at the New Zealand School of Military Engineering (SME), and Officer Commanding (OC) of 5 Support Squadron in 1979. Retired from military service in 1980.
